Jenni Smit and Mags Beksinska attended  a workshop in  August organized by the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office, University of the Witwatersrand, Right to Care and the Womens’ Health Research Unit, University of Cape Town, regarding the contraceptive implant roll out in the context of South Africa’s HIV epidemic. The roll out of implants has generated considerable discussion and in response, it was decided to host a discussion on the progress of the roll out – including its successes and challenges. The aim of the meeting was to get  updates on issues such as procurement/budgeting, service delivery, feedback from the ground, social aspects of the roll out, and clinical issues.  The meeting also gave an opportunity to discuss ongoing and planned research related to roll out and advocacy issues related to implants.
